Long-Distance Hiking in the Topo Athletic Terraventure 5

With the Topo Athletic Terraventure 3 I was only half satisfied. With the latest Altra models, though – such as the Altra Lone Peak 6 or the Altra Timp 5 – I’ve become even less satisfied. And that’s not because of the poor durability of recent years: by the looks of it, the models of the 9 series have actually become quite a bit more robust. My problem is the fit, which has changed for the worse for me over the last few years. My big toe points upwards, so in the Altra models I hit the top of the toe box. That doesn’t happen in the Topo Athletic Terraventure. I’ve also worn out a pair of the Terraventure 4 without writing anything about it. Now that a pair of the Topo Athletic Terraventure 5 is done, it’s about time for a review again.

How I tested them

I wore the Topo Athletic Terraventure 5 for around 730 km (about 450 miles) on my section hike on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in August 2026. The route led through the high mountains of the Sierra Nevada, from Kennedy Meadows South to South Lake Tahoe. The first few days were still a bit desert-like; later I was up at over 4,000 m (13,000 ft) in rocky alpine terrain. Apart from snow, the shoes saw every kind of weather, and besides the 27 hiking days they also had to prove themselves on the asphalt of the towns on rest days.

What I liked about the Terraventure 5

  • Rock plate in the sole
  • Gaiters are easy to attach
  • New FKT insole
  • Good fit at the heel and midfoot

The built-in rock plate reliably protected my feet from rocks. While with Altra shoes I eventually find myself wishing the lost cushioning back, here I had no problems with sore feet from all the scree on the trail, even after 700 km (435 miles). I probably owe that to the rock plate.

Finally a decent attachment for gaiters

A huge change for me on this model is the new gaiter attachment. Topo has finally thrown its own system overboard, which could still be found on the Terraventure 4, and switched this year’s entire line-up to the Velcro strip I love, just like the one you know from Altra shoes.

The second big change is the FKT insole. In my opinion it is much more robust and, thanks to the new material, absorbs noticeably less moisture. As a result, the shoe also dries faster overall.

I simply like the fit best of all the shoes I’ve tried so far. Of course, that is anything but objective.

What I didn’t like about the Terraventure 5

  • Durability

The same old problem: despite radically trimmed nails and two pairs of socks, my big toe drills its way out into the open – this time, though, much later than with the Terraventure 3. What’s new is that at some point the material gave up on the side as well. The pictures I can show you look worse than it really was, though, because at some point I got caught on a stick with the hole. After roughly 500 km (310 miles) I also had the impression that the outsole had less grip than at the beginning. But I have to add that I’m a heavy hiker, was carrying a heavy pack and am wearing a shoe that was actually developed for running. Topo’s actual hiking model is the Traverse, but with 5 mm (0.2 in) its drop is too high for me.

Comparison photos: new vs. old

Since I got myself a new pair of Terraventure 5 and still flew home in the old ones, here are a few comparison photos of what my shoes looked like after 730 km (450 miles) next to the brand-new ones.

My verdict on the Topo Athletic Terraventure 5

After I got back from my hike, I ordered a new pair right away. Despite the durability, which leaves room for improvement, I currently don’t know a better shoe for hiking for myself. At some point I do want to try the new Topo Pursuit model as well (I’ve already reviewed its predecessor), but I’ll probably have to wait for the next sale, because trail runners are damn expensive.

My rating: ★★★★☆ – 4 out of 5 stars
