Today was our last day with Stefan. He had planned to hike only as far as Lugo and leave from there as, unlike us, he had already completed several other Caminos and had already covered the last few kilometers of the Camino Primitivo.

Lugo – An important milestone
Lugo is an important milestone on the Camino Primitivo. The way there includes the last major climb, and the city itself is one of the most beautiful and historically important towns on the route. So impressive, in fact, that we had already decided from the outset to take a rest day here to explore the town at our leisure.
The road to Lugo
As on the previous day, the weather was perfect – bright blue and pleasantly warm. I was glad that I had packed a little more water for us this time to defy the sun. The Camino again took us through many small villages that are typical of this region. In one of these villages, a flock of sheep even blocked our path, which gave us a moment of entertainment. But the biggest surprise came when we finally spotted Lugo in the distance. At first it was hard to believe that the city could really be so beautiful, but the closer we got to the center, the more Lugo revealed its charm.

Lugo – History and sights
Once we arrived in Lugo, we visited the famous Roman city wall that characterizes the cityscape. It was built in the 3rd century AD and is one of the best-preserved examples of Roman military architecture. The wall stretches for around 2 kilometers and encompasses the historic center of the city. Its preservation is particularly impressive – with 10 gates and 71 towers that bring the history of the city to life. We walked along the wall for a while and enjoyed the view of Lugo from above.
Another highlight was the cathedral of Lugo (Catedral de Santa María), which we admired from the outside. It was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style and later extended with Gothic elements. The mixture of different architectural styles gives the cathedral a special aura. Although there is an entrance fee to visit the interior, we received our pilgrim’s stamp free of charge.
Of course, we didn’t leave the historic center untouched. The narrow streets and the Praza Maior, Lugo’s main square, are a real gem. Surrounded by well-preserved medieval and Renaissance buildings, the square has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. It was the perfect place to leave pilgrim life behind for a moment and immerse yourself in the city’s history and culture. Lugo, once a Roman fortress, has managed to retain much of its historical charm over the centuries and is now a popular destination for travelers and pilgrims alike.
