After a leisurely start to the first stage, the second day started much earlier. We were the first from our room to leave the accommodation. The morning was at its most beautiful and the view from the bridge, which we soon reached, was particularly impressive. The river and the steep rock faces offered a picturesque panorama – a perfect start to the day.

Our route took us to Grado, a small town known for its traditional weekly market. The “Mercado de Grado”, which takes place on Sundays and Wednesdays, is one of the oldest trading centers in Asturias. Grado charmingly combines country life with urban flair and is strategically located between the green hills of the region.
Here we took a breakfast break in a small café. Once again, we realized that our English skills are only of limited help in Spain. But somehow we managed to manage everything with our hands and feet. In the café, I also experienced a little anecdote that I won’t soon forget: I had gone to the men’s toilet only to find that there was no toilet paper. An “emergency call” to Kathi was necessary, who eventually helped me out of the ladies’ toilet. My personal travel tip for Grado: check if there is paper before going to the toilet!

The ascent begins
After leaving Grado, the more strenuous part of the stage began. While the route up to Grado was almost flat, we were now faced with over 400 meters of ascent over the next 6 kilometers – the only real climb of the day. The path led us through dense forests and small hamlets, typical of the original Asturian landscape. From the highest point of the route, it was all downhill.

Cornellana – Monastery and rest stop
Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate after Grado. It rained again and again, and shortly before Cornellana the showers became so heavy that we decided to end the stage here.
Cornellana is best known for the impressive San Salvador monastery, which dates back to the 11th century. The monastery was once an important pilgrimage center and today offers an insight into the religious history of the region. Its Romanesque and Baroque elements attract architecture enthusiasts.
We booked into private accommodation, enjoyed a soothing hot shower and home-cooked food. I found the ingredients for this in a small store in the village, whose selection was modest but sufficient. Despite the rain, the day was a wonderful adventure, which we ended up winding down in peace and quiet.
