The next morning, when we left the hotel in Grandas de Salime, the weather showed its more gracious side. The stores had also opened by now, which gave us the opportunity to stock up on fresh snacks at the local corner store. On the way out of the village, we picked up Stefan at one of the cafés along the way and set off together on the long walk to A Fonsagrada.

A path full of charm and challenges

The route took us through small, charming villages, which were picturesque with their rural character and flowering meadows. Past herds of cows and lush fields of flowers, the route climbed steadily uphill along roads and wide gravel paths. The first 14 kilometers were characterized by a constant but manageable incline, which challenged us physically but also rewarded us with beautiful views.

Although the proximity to the road was less appealing in some sections, I still remember this part of the tour as very beautiful. Nevertheless, for me it didn’t quite match the scenic variety of the previous day.

On separate paths to A Fonsagrada

Shortly before entering A Fonsagrada, our group decided to split up the route. Kathi and Stefan chose the easier route along the road to reach the village more quickly. I, on the other hand, opted for the challenge and followed the steeper original path, which was more strenuous but more scenic.

A Fonsagrada, known for its role on the Camino Primitivo and as the highest town in Galicia, welcomed us with its peaceful atmosphere. The name of the town goes back to an old legend which says that the apostle James created a well of healing water here.

Evening exploration and first complaints

In A Fonsagrada, we again found a private room in one of the cozy accommodations. After a short rest, we set off to explore the town. Dinner consisted of a typical pilgrim’s menu in one of the local restaurants, which rounded off the day perfectly with its hearty simplicity. We then went to the supermarket to buy water and snacks for the day ahead.

Unfortunately, I felt pain in my knee for the first time. However, I hoped that it would subside by the next morning so that we could continue our journey without any worries.
