Rain was often our biggest problem on this hike, but today the weather went one better. In addition to the rain, a strong wind blew against us – on the very day on which we crossed the highest point of the Camino Primitivo on the famous Hospitales route: 1,220 meters above sea level.

An arduous start to the day

After a fairly modest breakfast at the hostel, the route initially climbed steadily. With every meter of altitude gained, the weather deteriorated noticeably. But we were not alone: together with a group of around 10 to 15 other hikers, we braved the rain and whipping wind. Once we reached the top of the ridge, the conditions worsened – the wind became even stronger and the rain continued unabated. Along the way, we came across several ruins that silently told of times gone by.

Missed opportunities in an impressive landscape

It was a shame that we didn’t have better weather, as the barren landscape and breathtaking views literally invited us to linger. However, the harsh weather only allowed us to pause for a brief moment before we set off again. The weather finally improved on the descent. Shortly before we reached Berducedo, the sun even came out and gave us a beautiful end to the day – albeit a little too late to make up for the previous exertions.

Relaxing in Berducedo

When we arrived in Berducedo, we spent the night in the public hostel. Instead of using the kitchen, we treated ourselves to dinner in one of the small restaurants in the village. After this exhausting day, we went to bed early, accompanied by the hope of better weather for the next stage.
