From Tineo, it’s initially uphill again until we’re back on the trail. It’s cool and windy, but at least it’s not raining when we leave the hostel. The trail begins on beautiful, green paths, but over time it turns more and more into a road walk. The idyllic landscape gives way to asphalt, which changes the character of the trail somewhat.

On the way to the highest point of the Camino Primitivo

Our destination is fast approaching: the highest point of the Camino Primitivo. If you choose the famous Hospitales route, you will be confronted with one of the most challenging but also most rewarding stages of the Camino de Santiago. The Hospitales route is considered difficult because, by the standards of the Camino de Santiago, it lacks accommodation and any trace of civilization for long stretches. Nevertheless, this variant is even shorter than the route via Pola de Allande. However, the weather conditions can be extreme. In winter, it is often recommended to avoid this route.

A new option: The hostel in Colinas de Arriba

However, the situation has eased somewhat since the new private hostel in Colinas de Arriba was opened. This opens up a third option: for example, we deviated from the classic Hospitales route to reach the new hostel. The hostel in Colinas de Arriba left us with a very nice and well-kept impression. From there, we decided to return to the Hospitales route – but that’s a story for the next post.
