After one of the most memorable nights on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), under a starry sky that took our breath away, we continued our hike. The morning began with breathtaking views and the knowledge that our next destination – a water cache – was only a few kilometers away. But as is often the case on the trail, the path led uphill one last time before we could reach our destination.

A magical morning on the PCT: The water cache and the encounter with the Trail Angel

The water cache itself was more than just a simple place to fill up our bottles. It was lovingly maintained by a Trail Angel who had taken over this cache from his late brother. The cache was not only a life-saving point for hikers, but also a monument to humanity on this daunting trail. A touching story preceded the cache: a thru-hiker who was once so severely dehydrated that he had to be hospitalized encountered the Trail Angel’s brother. This incident inspired the Trail Angel to create the water cache and thus make life easier for many hikers.

Trail Magic on the PCT

The trail led us on, and after we had left the water cache behind us, the last steep meters of altitude awaited us. But these were quickly overcome and soon we were mainly heading downhill towards a wind farm. Near the wind farm, we met a group of Trail Angels – a couple who had walked the PCT the year before and were now inviting all the hikers who were staying there for dinner and breakfast.

Although we decided to hike a little further so as not to spend the night there, we still got to enjoy a little “trail magic”: one of the thruhikers, who had finished his hike because he missed his family very much, and his wife had provided drinks and snacks for all the other hikers and generously distributed them. It is these small gestures that make the PCT an extraordinary experience.

Hike through wind farms and the last night on the PCT

Well fortified, we made our way through the next wind farm. And since we loved wind farms so much, we decided to spend the night there – not knowing at the time that it would be our last night on the trail. But I’ll tell you more about that in the next part of our PCT trip.
