The day began like many before it: pack your rucksack, gather your things, briefly enjoy the view of the huge wind turbines. Our goal: to reach the road and take the bus to Tehachapi from there.

But after just a few kilometers, our hike was turned upside down. Suddenly, three cute, trusting dogs appeared – and decided to accompany us. For kilometers! 🐶

We tried to find the owners via Facebook (two dogs had collars), unfortunately without success. Instead of the planned two hours to the road, it turned out to be many – including water sharing with our new friends. And just before the road? Zack, the dogs disappeared into the desert again.

Trail Magic – literally

Once we arrived at the main road, we had to wait. The bus wasn’t due for a few hours. But then what many call “trail magic” happened: A couple stopped and invited us and two other hikers to join them – he drove us into town, she waited on the highway in the meantime. It’s unbelievable how helpful many people are to hikers on the PCT.

Arriving, getting sick, rescheduling

We checked into the hotel in Tehachapi and quickly did some supermarket shopping for the next stage – but that didn’t work out. As soon as we got back to the hotel, I (Michael) suddenly couldn’t do anything. At first I thought it was sunstroke, but it was more than that – I had caught something really bad and had a real cold. 😷

Not the end we wanted for this part of the trip.
…but no reason to be sad

Nevertheless, the two weeks on the trail were intense, beautiful, exhausting and full of little stories. And afterwards, we went on a really cool road trip through the west of the USA – Kathi had never been there before, and I think that was another special highlight.
