Today our journey began in Santa Clarita. After dropping off the rental car, we took a Lyft, a kind of cab. Our destination was a campsite near Acton, right on the trail. But there was a problem right at the start: there were two campsites on the same street and I had chosen the wrong one. This was a few miles past our actual destination. Fortunately, we were able to persuade the driver to take us to our original destination after all in exchange for a good tip.

Once we had overcome this first hurdle, we set off straight away: the trail led us down from the road, through a small green jungle and directly over a river. To be honest, I hadn’t expected that. But the PCT soon showed its best side again: serpentine climbs on green-brown hills covered with beautiful wildflowers, rattlesnakes and blooming cacti in spring.

The trail led us steadily towards the Antelope Valley Freeway, and even from a great distance you could hear the roar of passing cars. The freeway was the only thing between us and our next destinations – Vasquez Rocks and Agua Dulce. Luckily, the trail led far under the road and into the picturesque Vasquez Rocks County Park, which has been featured in Bonanza, MacGyver and Star Trek movies with its striking rock formations. Even if you are not traveling in the nerd cosmos, you can still be enchanted by the impressive rocks.

From here we continued on to Agua Dulce. We had barely set foot on the road when we came across Trailmagic: someone gave us an ice cream from a passing car.

We then continued on to Sweetwater Farms, the new supermarket that had opened this year. I had deliberately packed less food and planned to pick up supplies here to reduce the weight of our rucksack.

After shopping, we set off to find a suitable place to sleep. We opted for a night at Cowboy Camping, with a wonderful view of the adjacent scrapyard. Our first day ended after 21.74 km and 740 meters in altitude.
