The Winterberger Hochtour (WHT) is around 80 kilometers long and takes hikers on a varied journey around the picturesque village of Winterberg in the Sauerland region. The trail not only connects all 10 districts, but also leads over the four highest mountains in the region: the Kahler Asten (841 m above sea level), the Langenberg (843 m above sea level), the Hegekopf (842 m above sea level) and the Ettelsberg (838 m above sea level).

A particular highlight of the route is the direct crossing of the Neuer Hagen high heath, the largest and highest heath area in north-west Germany. Here, hikers experience the breathtaking nature of the Sauerland at every turn, from dense forests and rolling hills to vast heathlands and spectacular views.

We hiked the Winterberger Hochtour in the week after Easter 2024 and experienced a lot of rain and mud along the way. Despite the adverse conditions, we overcame the challenge and completed the tour in 4 stages.

Accommodation and campsites

Our original plan was to spend the entire route of the Winterberger Hochtour on campsites. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. On the first evening we received the news from the campsite in Winterberg that, despite the pouring rain in the week after Easter, there was no more space for a tent. It is probably advisable to book in advance.

Due to the weather, we only camped once before Mollseifen. However, it is possible to hike from campsite to campsite without any major detours. However, the stages will be somewhat shorter as a result.

When wild camping, you will find some nice huts along the way that offer shelter. Those who prefer to take it easy and hike from hotel to hotel will probably have the easiest time. The trail leads through many villages with a strong tourist character. However, I can imagine that it is advisable to make a reservation in the high season.

Further information about the Winterberg Hochtour

Apart from the official tourism and marketing websites for the Winterberg Hochtour, I only found the informative website Hikingexperience.net. The operators of this website have walked the trail themselves and offer valuable information for hikers.

I will publish the details of our individual stages over the next few weeks.
