Anyone looking into emergency rations can hardly avoid the name BP-5. One pack contains 500 g made up of 18 biscuits. In total, a pack of BP-5 provides 2,020 kcal, which should cover the daily calorie needs of an adult – provided, of course, that no heavy physical work is being done, because then the emergency ration alone won’t be enough.

Like all emergency rations I know, BP-5 can be eaten as it is or mixed with milk or water into a porridge. Personally, I usually skip the effort of turning it into porridge, because the bars don’t taste nearly as bad as you might think. The shelf life of the bars is around 5 years.
Taste-wise, I couldn’t really notice much difference from the Travellunch K1000 Compact Rations (review in German). What I liked much better, however, is that BP-5 crumbles a lot less, so more of it ends up in your mouth and not on the ground.
A 500 g pack of BP-5 costs around €8.50 and is available from, among others, the OutdoorFoodShop.
