The hike begins in the picturesque Sophienhof, a historic village in the southern Harz Mountains. Founded in the 17th century, Sophienhof was given its name in 1720 in honor of Sophie Charlotte Countess of Leiningen-Westerburg. In addition to its fascinating history, the village is also close to the Harz narrow-gauge railroad, which makes it easy to get here, and the Ziegenalm, where the first stamp of the hike awaits you – and perhaps a scoop of delicious goat’s milk ice cream.

Sophienhof is also the starting point of the southern steam train ascent, which can be wonderfully combined with the stamp points. The trail leads through a varied landscape that will delight both nature lovers and history buffs.

The first stamp is at the Ziegenalm by the train stop, and then the trail continues steeply uphill along an overgrown path. However, the climb is well worth it, especially in summer when the wide expanse is bathed in a sea of purple flowers. Whether it is similarly beautiful at other times of year is anyone’s guess. The next stop is the Carlsturm, a huge observation tower from which you have a breathtaking view over the landscape. On the way there, I once again made my way through the undergrowth to the Walzenhütte, but the path to the Oberharzblick on the Buchenberg and the Stierbergsteich is easily accessible.

The hike ended in the evening and the sky was simply stunning. It was the perfect end to a great day. I hope you have just as much luck with the weather on your hike around Sophienhof. Feel free to share how you enjoyed the hike in the comments!
