The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) requires a good level of physical fitness and, in some places, surefootedness. With an altitude difference of around 10,000 meters, the TMB is definitely strenuous, but the breathtaking views of glaciers, mountain lakes and alpine valleys quickly make up for this. Thanks to the good infrastructure, it is possible to carry little luggage, sleep in a bed every night and keep the stages short. However, the tour is very popular. I wouldn’t do the tour again just because of the crowds. I had the impression that it was emptier on the Camino Primitivo this year than on the TMB.

My highlights on the Tour du Mont Blanc

Some people may count the small towns or even the tourist magnets of Chamonix and Courmayeur among their favorites. My personal highlights, however, were the landscapes on the last stage from Tré-le-Champ to Les Houches. The route led partly through an impressive landscape, a veritable sea of rocks.

I also really liked the alternative route between Courmayeur and La Fouly. There it went over a wide mountain ridge and over two different passes. This variant had more vertical meters, but was also much emptier than the main TMB route.

Camping on the TMB

People sleep everywhere. I’ve seen tents in the most unlikely places, sometimes even huge clusters of tents.

Bivouac sites in France

In France, for example, there are special legal bivouac sites where you can pitch your tent from 7 pm. There are also a few places for which you have to register, although not the one we used on the first day. There are usually also toilets at these sites.

Camping in Italy

In Italy, camping tends to involve detours. On our first night in Italy, we stayed in a hotel room in Courmayeur (€150) as we were completely soaked. However, you can also take the bus to the hobo camp for free and stay there for much less money. We finished the second stage in Italy right next to a bus stop. There was also a free shuttle bus to a campsite (Camping Grandes Jorasses), which I can only recommend. However, you should be prepared for the first bus to be very full in the morning. The last bus left at 18:40 during our hike in 2024. It’s best to check the current timetable beforehand.

Camping in Switzerland

In Switzerland, I have often seen beautiful places that were used for wild camping. In other places that were listed as legal wild camping sites in the “FarOut” app, there were big signs saying that it was forbidden. Here, too, we stuck to official campsites, which was not entirely convenient in Switzerland. In La Fouly, two tents and three people cost around €40, and the second campsite at Col de la Forclaz was even more expensive, but no better. If we had made the descent to Trento, there would have been a much better alternative (La Peuty).

Back in France, we spent another night in a hotel as we were completely frozen after a very long stage. We took the train to a hotel. I particularly liked the campsite at the last rifugio before Les Houches.

Supplying drinking water and food on the Tour du Mont Blanc

If you don’t want it, you don’t have to carry much. Water is actually easily accessible every day, especially if you have a water filter with you. I would recommend everyone to take a BeFree or similar filter system with them to be able to refill quickly and without worries on the go.

Although we carried almost all of our food from the start, it wasn’t necessary. You can eat in the huts or in restaurants along the way. There are also always small supermarkets to shop in. However, you should be prepared to spend a lot more money. By the way: sometimes you can only pay with cash.

The best time of year for the Tour du Mont Blanc

The ideal time to circumnavigate Mont Blanc is during the summer months of July to September. During this time, most mountain huts are open and the weather is usually stable. However, we had very bad weather in the first week of September 2024. It was often cloudy and rainy. The temperatures were between 5 and 10 °C on many days. So, even if September is still considered a good time to travel, you may well be as unlucky as we were. So be prepared for rain and not-so-summery temperatures.
