On the first day, we headed to the starting point from the campsite where we had spent the night and where we wanted to park our car for the next eight days. This was a little frustrating, as we had already walked past here the evening before on our way to the supermarket. However, you can’t start the trail without taking a proper starting photo with a rucksack. Once we had done that, we headed back along exactly the same route. However, this time we didn’t turn off to the campsite, but left Les Houches through a tunnel. Shortly afterwards, the path branched off to the left and led steeply uphill through the greenery. We were now climbing from 1000 m to almost 1700 m. An easy first day definitely looks different.
Once at the top, we saw a train station and the cogwheel train that was struggling up the mountain. At this point, the Tour du Mont Blanc split up for the first time: into the main route, which we took, and the longer and more difficult alternative route via Col de Tricot, which is said to be very attractive despite everything.
Fortunately for us, it was downhill from here, on an equally beautiful but not quite as alpine route. I liked the fact that the alternative route, which I felt the majority of people had chosen, gave us a little more peace and quiet along the way. Of course, there was a slight climb for us every now and then, but it only got really steep from the 21st kilometer onwards. Shortly after the pretty church, you leave the valley and begin an ascent that leads up to 2500 m. But for us, it ended after 23 km. For us, however, it ended after 23 km. We had only reached 1500 m and had decided to postpone the rest of the climb until tomorrow.
We stopped at the first official bivouac site in France. As we reached our destination before the tents were pitched – pitching is only permitted from 7 p.m. – we used the time to cook and relax by the river. Unfortunately, it started to rain at around 6 p.m., so we had to set up the tent earlier. The further the evening progressed, the more crowded the campsite became. I was glad that we arrived quite early and had almost free choice of pitch.
It was really idyllic there: on one side the rushing stream, and right next to it the cow pasture, where it felt like every cow was constantly ringing its cowbell. But that didn’t bother me any more, because I fell asleep quite quickly after the exhausting day.
