As breakfast was already included in the hotel room, we had a good excuse to start the day slowly. We met up at 8 a.m. and hit the buffet. Shortly afterwards, Maciek set off again as he had a somewhat tight schedule.

I took my time to finish packing my things and did a bit of research on today’s possible alternative route. Then we made our way out of Courmayeur. Even in the town, it was already uphill. We had to cover 800 vertical meters in 5 km before we arrived at the Rifugio Giorgio Bertone Vecchio. The weather was so nice today that I was able to catch my first glimpse of Mont Blanc. I had feared that I had circumnavigated it without even seeing it once.

This is where we parted ways again: my parents took the classic route, which stayed at roughly the same altitude until they reached the stage finish. I think this was the easiest day on the TMB for them.

I, on the other hand, opted for the variant over the Tête Bernarda, which wasn’t much longer, but took me another 500 meters up to the Col de Sapin, over a beautiful, round and green ridge. I then descended another 300 meters, past a stream, and enjoyed this lonely route in the sun. I photographed mushrooms and butterflies as I walked towards the next pass, which took me back up to 2552 meters: the Col Entre Deux Sauts. If you want, you can also climb the 2728-metre summit here, but I had no interest in doing so.

From there, I continued downhill for quite a while before rejoining the main route. Once there, I had to hurry, as the last bus left at 6:45 pm and we really wanted to take the free bus to a nearby campsite. There was delicious pizza and clean toilets, but the atmosphere was a bit chaotic. Paying in the evening was particularly difficult. Nevertheless, I can only recommend the Grandes Jorasses campsite.
