From Høruphav to Skovby
The last stage of the Gendarmstien has only existed since 2019 and, at around 10 kilometres, is comparatively short. We set off from the harbour of Høruphav, which was already quite busy despite the early hour. With its small shops, a guardhouse and plenty of boats coming and going, everything felt very lively. First we fortified ourselves with a snack from the nearby supermarket and had breakfast at the harbour with a view of the waterway.

Through private gardens to the coast
The trail led us past toilets and a red warehouse straight to the coast. It almost felt like walking through private gardens – a house on the left, a private beach on the right. A piece of nature generously given to us to enjoy.
Pure nature and birdwatching
Throughout the day the route offered beautiful views of the Kegnæs peninsula. We stayed on the narrow paths, crossing patches of woodland and coastal slopes, while flocks of birds kept passing overhead. Deer crossed our path too – just as surprised by us as we were by them. Particularly striking were the stunted pines, their gnarled branches reaching into the sky like old fingers.
Detour to the torpedo station
If you like, you can make a short detour to the Hørup Klint torpedo station with its old bunkers from 1958 – a fascinating relic from a time when coast, war and research came together here. We, however, decided to enjoy nature and let the day wind down quietly.
Arrival in Skovby
Finally the trail led across fields and small farm tracks to Skovby, where the stage unfortunately ended rather unspectacularly at a faded information board. But that hardly mattered – after all the experiences of the past few days we realised once again that the journey itself is the real destination. How to get from Skovby back to Padborg is described under Arrival and departure.
