Wernigerode: 12 km Circular Hike with Four Harz Stamps

This walk was actually planned as a longer tour of the crags, but the combination of short winter days and getting up late does not always work out. So it turned into a circular hike of just under 12 km starting from Wernigerode, on which we at least collected 4 stamps for our shared stamp booklet.

Stamp points on the circular hike

  • HWN085 Wasserkunst Thumkuhlental
  • HWN027 Ottofelsen
  • HWN028 Gasthaus Steinerne Renne
  • HWN026 Mönchsbuche
Mönchsbuche

We started at Steinerne Renne station, where there are a few parking spaces. From there we set off up a steep and beautiful path, because our first destination was the Mönchsbuche with its shelter and stamp point (no. 206).

From there we carried on to the Gasthaus Steinerne Renne along a broad but lovely path that also offers a great view of Wernigerode and its castle. When we reached the Steinerne Renne it was still too early in the season for the inn to be open, but there was plenty going on all the same. So we quickly collected the stamp and escaped across the bridge – which by now looked rather battered and was missing part of its railing – heading on towards the Ottofelsen. We did not take the direct route, though, because originally we had wanted to climb up to the Leistenklippe as well, something we gave up on after a glance at the clock.

From the Ottofelsen it was downhill all the way to stamp point 85, Wasserkunst Thumkuhlental, which sadly I have never seen in action. Every time I am here, everything is standing still. We then walked back to the car in the evening light along the edge of Wernigerode.
