Berlin High Trail – Stage 1 – From Mayrhofen to the Edelhütte

It was very late in the afternoon when we finally set off on the first stage of the Berlin High Trail (Berliner Höhenweg) in Austria. Before that we still had to descend from the Bayreuther Hütte and drive to Mayrhofen. After getting caught in a rain shower the day before, it felt good to start the ascent in fine weather.

The start is a steep forest path that, after quite a while, leads to a large meadow. From there you walk straight towards the Alpenrose, where you can happily treat yourself to a cold beer. You should think carefully about whether you really want to skip it, as from the Alpenrose it is still quite a way further up the mountain.

On the last few metres the weather turned, and our destination, the Edelhütte, could no longer really be seen in the fog. To avoid getting caught in another rain shower, we picked up the pace a little. We arrived at the hut around 6 pm and first of all ordered a beer each before taking care of anything else.

The hut was busy, as a group had just finished their hike on the Berlin High Trail coming from the other direction. There was drinking and swapping of stories late into the night. That and the rather modest mattresses made for a rather restless first night on the Berlin High Trail.

The sleeping places in the dormitory were not exactly the most comfortable. As a vegetarian, I always asked at the huts for a vegetarian version of the mountaineer’s meal. What I was served was a plate of pasta with a large piece of butter. Breakfast consisted of three slices of bread and plenty of toppings. On request I got extra cheese instead of cold cuts.
