Multiday / Backcountry Hikes in Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park is located in the transition between the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert. Multi-day hikes in the summer are not recommended under any circumstances. In any case, thorough preparation is absolutely necessary for multi-day tours. You should also discuss your plans with the park rangers.

If overnight stays are planned, you have to register on a backcountry board. The car must be parked in one of the campgrounds or at one of these boards. Vehicles parked overnight in other locations may be towed, which can be extraordinarily expensive.

Basic rules for the overnight campground:

  • The campground must be at least 1 mile from any road and 500 feet (about 150 meters) from any trail.
  • Dried-up riverbeds should generally be avoided because of the risk of flash floods.
  • Open fires are only allowed on the official campgrounds

There is a typical desert climate in Joshua Tree NP, which can lead to extreme temperature fluctuations during the day and night. Bring enough water (4 liters per day and person are recommended). Do not forget sunscreen!

Good topographic maps (available at the Visitor Center) and a compass are necessary for tours in the backcountry.

Accommodation

In the park itself there are no accommodations for tourists except for some simple campsites, most of which do not even have running water. In the surrounding villages there is the possibility of hotel accommodation.
