Weltwald and the Iberg Albert Tower – Two Stamps from Bad Grund

Bad Grund is an ideal starting point for hikes and offers some of the finest natural attractions in the Harz – despite the fact that the village can only be reached by car or bus.

Several well-known trails start here, among them the Harzer Baudenstieg, the Harzer Försterstieg, which runs close by, and the Karstwanderweg, which begins in Bad Grund. And it is not only hikers who get their money’s worth: the Iberg cave experience centre and the Weltwald Harz offer plenty for anyone interested in nature.

For today’s outing we picked a compact 7 km stamp-collecting hike – perfect for a short round after work, as long as the drive there is not too long.

Starting point: Bad Grund and the climb to the Iberg Albert tower

We start at the car park in front of the small supermarket in Bad Grund. From here it goes straight uphill to the Iberg Albert tower. The climb is no joke, especially on a warm August day like today – a real challenge that had me sweating properly. But the view is worth it. If you arrive during opening hours you can collect Harzer Wandernadel stamp no. 130 here and, with a bit of luck, enjoy a cold drink as well.

Crossing the Weltwald

From the tower the route drops towards the Weltwald, a remarkable arboretum with trees from all over the world. Unfortunately several fallen trees lay across the path and it was officially closed – but with a small detour we reached our next destination.

There is a lot to discover in the Weltwald: besides the exotic tree species there is a themed woodland trail and, of course, stamp no. 129. The path network covers around 14 kilometres in total, but we explore only a small part of it.

Back to Bad Grund

After leaving the Weltwald we take a short loop through Bad Grund before arriving back at the car park. A short but varied outing with two checkpoints and some lovely nature – a perfect little hike in the Harz.
