Parque Natural S´Albufera de Mallorca

The nature park lies in the north-western part of the island, near the town of Alcudia. The park is easy to find from Port Alcudia and is located right by the water. The route itself is a circular trail of about 13 kilometres that starts at the hotel “Grupotel Parc Natural”. The trail is completely flat, ranges from slightly stony to grassy paths and can be rated as easy for the experienced hiker.

As mentioned, the circular trail starts at the Grupotel Parc Natural and first leads to a tourist information office, from which you can choose between 4 different routes. The one described here is route number 3, marked in red. In addition, all trails are marked and signposted. As it is a circular trail, you can walk it in either direction. This article describes the direction that heads south at the start.

At first you follow a rough path beside a small paved road along a wide river. After a few hundred metres you have to turn left for the first time and follow a long path to its end. To begin with you can enjoy the tall bamboo fields, which do, however, restrict the view considerably. After a few metres you will find the first raised viewing platform on the right-hand side, which invites you to take a break and gives you the chance to survey the whole marsh from a higher vantage point. You also pass a number of fields where, at certain times, the farmers tend their gardens. Mainly tomatoes and plums are grown here.

Along the path you can discover old Mediterranean buildings, some of which have already collapsed and some of which have even been renovated. You don’t need to worry about turn-offs or the like here, as the path simply runs straight ahead and at the end there is usually only one opportunity to turn. Sooner or later, however, you will come out in a village that simply does not fit the picture of the park. What is more, there is NO sign at this particular spot. So you have to take the first turn-off that leads to the right, even though there is NO sign here. If you reach the main road in the village, you have already gone too far. You can recognise the right path by the fact that it takes you past small gardens and barking dogs. Many old, collapsed houses stand here, which you may enter at your own risk – something that is not advisable, though, when you look at the buildings.

If you continue along this path, sooner or later you will spot a sign again that shows you the way. Once you have passed this sign, however, you will quickly come upon the most interesting part of this track. After wondering for a few hundred metres why there is so much dung on the path, you reach a kind of pasture. Although at first it looks as if a herd of bulls with pointed horns is waiting for you, they actually just stand around. You do, however, have to share the only path with these new friends for the next few hundred metres.

After another few hundred metres you reach an exit of the park. Although there is a sign here that tries to tell you that the park ends here and that they were pleased about your visit, the trail does continue. You simply have to cross the bridge in front of you, then turn right again and follow the path to its right-hand end. On this stretch you pass another very fine observation tower and, a little later, the tourist information office again.
