When I opened my eyes this morning, I could hardly believe them: The area in front of our tarp looked as if it had been dusted with powdered sugar. It must have frozen overnight and snowed lightly – we hadn’t noticed any of that while we were asleep. When we finally peeled ourselves out of our sleeping bags and started to pack our things, it briefly seemed as if the snow would disappear again. But as soon as we were ready to go, it really started to snow. At an altitude of around 1800 meters, we trudged through ankle-deep snow.

The snow could have stayed, but at a certain altitude it turned into rain – much more unpleasant. Especially because my self-sewn fanny pack was unfortunately not as waterproof as I had hoped. But every time the rain took a break, it was a magical moment: the vast desert in front of us, the snow-covered mountains behind us. And every time the sun broke through, the water literally steamed off us – and we were rewarded with a rainbow over the desert. You really don’t see something like that every day.

We completed today’s stage in record time – partly because there was a lot of downhill and partly because Kathi’s knee was now really sore. Nevertheless, we reached Hikertown: a small, charming paradise for hikers in the middle of nowhere. For a donation, you can camp, shower, do laundry or even take a room there – and everything looks like it’s straight out of an old western movie.

However, our decision was already made: we would take the next best opportunity to drive to Lancaster. We wanted to get some knee supports there and treat ourselves to a well-deserved rest day.
