The trailhead of the Opal Hills Trail is located at Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park. The starting point is best reached from the top of the three large parking lots located at Maligne Lake. Although these are relatively large, they may be full during the season and at weekends.

Hiking in Jasper National Park in Canada

At first, the trail is quite flat and passes a meadow. This short section of the trail is identical to the short Marry Schäffer Loop, part of which leads directly along Maligne Lake. After a short time, however, the trail begins to climb steadily. The gradient is quite steep, but as it mostly goes through a dense forest, there is at least plenty of shade if it gets a bit warmer.

After a while, we reach a junction. We decided to take the steep path to the right uphill. When you reach the top, there is a small undocumented path up to a hill from where you have a good view of Maligne Lake. From here, the trail leads across a plateau with a meadow that is full of flowers in summer. At the end of this plateau, the trail descends quickly again. Here you can occasionally catch a glimpse of Maline Lake through the trees. After a while, we are back at the junction from where we took the path uphill. We now head back the way we came.
