I think “voyage of discovery” sums it up very well, because you rarely get to see so many impressive things in such a short distance. It’s not for nothing that the region here is well hiked. As always, my version of these three popular stamping points is a little overgrown, but rewards us with a steep, sandy descent and a view of the sand caves in the Heers from high above. However, the path is easy to follow as far as the Regenstein castle ruins.

Stamp points on the hike

  • No. 80 Regenstein castle ruins
  • No. 81 Sand caves in the Heers
  • No. 82 Regenstein mill

We start in the large parking lot in front of the dog school and make our way directly to the impressive Regenstein mill. It’s a shame that the water no longer flows there – it would certainly be even more impressive. We then head to the castle ruins. Admission costs €4, but I was a bit too stingy and just took the stamp and walked around the castle. However, my parents have visited the castle and think it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

After a steep descent next to the military area and a beautiful view of the sand caves, we arrived at them in no time at all. There is always a lot going on here, which is understandable as the sand caves in the pine forest are simply fascinating.

Afterwards, I made a detour to the Regensteinblick viewpoint, which I don’t think you can do in future, as the large conifers block almost the entire view of the castle.

Now we pass several small sand caves, where not a soul was around, although they are no less impressive. My real highlight, however, is the Great Papenberg. Somehow it was fun to climb this 225-metre-high rocky hill and look out over the surrounding countryside from there. The descent from there is also quick, and we arrive back on the other side of the parking lot in no time at all.
