It is only a stone’s throw from the train station in Porta Westfalica to the starting point of the Weserbergland Trail. Incidentally, this is also part of the North-South Trail, even if the route is not 100% identical. Right at the start, the paths diverge slightly: while we climb up to the Porta-Kanzel and then continue to the TV tower, the NST runs one level lower on the same mountain and almost parallel to the signposting for the Weserbergland Trail.

The Porta-Kanzel is a beautiful vantage point, behind which a small observation tower and a refuge appear shortly afterwards. Up to this point, the path is actually quite attractive. Once you reach the TV tower, you’ll find a kiosk and a larger tower, which you can probably climb for an entrance fee. However, when I arrived on Friday evening, everything was already closed.

Here, the path runs right next to a road almost the whole time. Perhaps the NST has the nicer route here. Otherwise, the trail leads through a beautiful forest. Towards evening it became very foggy and the forest thinned out a little as we passed a quarry. However, it became increasingly foggy and it rained quite heavily during the night. Fortunately, all that remained the next morning was the mist, which shrouded the forest in a mystical atmosphere.

Fortunately, the sun came out a little later. We passed the Frankenburg ruins, which are a few meters off the path, and the Klippenturm tower, which was fortunately open and offered a breathtaking view. Otherwise, it felt like the path ran along one ridge path after another, although in practice you don’t see much of it, at least not while the deciduous trees are still in leaf. It might be worth taking a detour here when the leaves are on the ground. However, once you have left the stairway to Hohenstein behind you, there is a great view from the Teufelskanzel that is not obscured by trees.

Here it started to rain again and a cool night began to fall. The next morning, it was less foggy as we continued on to the Süntelturm and along easy paths towards Unsen. The path then leads up and down the Schweineberg and finally up the next hill, before the last few meters to Rohrsen are relaxed along meadows and fields until you reach the village. Here I end my first stage on the Weserbergland Trail after almost 60 kilometers and turn right at the B 217 to walk towards Hameln to the train station, which is about 3 kilometers away.

If you are walking the stage, you should also get the GPX data from the North-South Trail website. The route deviates slightly, but the waypoints compiled on the website make planning much easier.
