The Hünenteich hiking trail in the Hainich National Park invites you to discover the many facets of one of Germany’s last great beech forests. The trail leads through impressive landscapes with old trees, dead wood, seasonal meltwater and open areas where nature is allowed to unfold freely. This scenic diversity is not only a delight for nature lovers, but also an adventure for the whole family.

Experience and discover nature

The Hünenteich hiking trail has been awarded the title “Quality Trail Hikeable Germany” by the German Hiking Association. This award stands for nature-friendly trails, reliable signposting and a varied nature experience – and makes the Hünenteich Trail the first certified themed trail under 20 kilometers in Thuringia.
Nature experiences and sights along the way

The 5.5-kilometre trail leads through a varied landscape with special stations:

  • Old orchard meadow: Here you will come across centuries-old trees that are in full bloom in spring and bear the fruits of nature in fall. A habitat for many bird species and small forest dwellers.
  • Erosion ditch: In spring, a sea of wild garlic flowers covers the forest floor. Deep ditches and old copper beeches with tinder sponges offer an insight into the natural dynamics of the Hainich.
  • Open spaces: Formerly used for military purposes, these clearings are now habitats for rare plants and birds that are gradually being reclaimed by nature.
  • Kellerloch and Hünenburg: These mystical sinkholes and ramparts tell of medieval use and long-gone settlements that have left traces of human history in the forest.
  • Hünenteich: An important habitat for frogs, alpine newts and numerous amphibians, which is particularly lively in spring. In summer, water irises and water mint line the banks.
  • Alder quarry: A rare wetland forest with alders that form robust stilt roots due to changing water levels. Here you will find a unique symbiosis of alders and nitrogen-binding microorganisms, which make this section of forest a lush green habitat.
