Today I would like to take you to a lesser-known part of the Harz foreland – at least it was previously unknown to me. Today we are going for a walk in the 119-hectare Heidberg nature reserve. The region here has been protected since 1997 and is only a few kilometers away from Quedlinburg. I had never heard of it before and, to be honest, only became aware of the region through a few photos of sandstone formations that I saw on Komoot.

The sandstone formations are probably the most striking feature of the area: they were formed around 100 million years ago and in some places rise over 20 meters into the air. The steeper rocks are particularly prominent in the north-west of the nature reserve.

However, the Heidberg is also an important habitat for many bird and plant species. Among others, the woodlark, mistle thrush and barn swallow breed here. The dry soils of the nature reserve are also home to rare and endangered plant species such as the sand immortelle and the heath carnation.

November may not be the ideal time to visit the Heidberg nature reserve, but to be honest I couldn’t wait to see the sandstone formations with my own eyes.
