From Rieder, you can go on a short circular hike and connect several places worth seeing in the Harz Mountains. Firstly, the Gegensteine, which I have already told you about in my post about the hike on the Harz Devil’s Wall Trail, and secondly, Roseburg Castle. If you have the castles and palaces stamp booklet, you can even collect a stamp there. If you are particularly good on foot, you can extend your hike on the Harz Devil’s Wall Trail by a few more kilometers. It’s worth it, because Roseburg Castle is really pretty to look at from the outside.
Maps From the circular hike to the Gegensteine and Roseburg Castle
I had no problem finding a place to park in Rieder. From there, the route followed easy paths with a slight incline past the Dicken Fels – the only indication for quite a while that we were still on the Teufelsmauer. Past the shooting range in Rieder, the trail then leads almost continuously to the shooting range near Ballenstedt. There is a short uphill section to the Gegensteinen as a one-way route. If you have already been there and don’t want to go up again, you can skip this section, turn off directly and continue to Roseburg Castle to save a few meters – but you should think about this carefully.
After a short stretch, the route now leads back along the opposite “mountain range” in the direction from which you came, past the Napoleon oaks, until you reach Roseburg Castle. You could have parked your car here, but you have to pay to park. As far as I could see, there is a café inside, but I didn’t visit it. I went straight on. From the Roseburg, there is then a short, less scenic section along the road until a bridge brings us back to our original path.
I’d never been to Roseburg Castle before and am glad that I spontaneously decided to walk the few extra meters. It’s really pretty to look at from the outside.

The history of Roseburg Castle
Roseburg Castle is located on the Steinberge hills near Ballenstedt and has a long and varied history. Originally, the “Rodolvesburg” was located here, the first mention of which dates back to 962. It served as a place of refuge and to monitor important trade routes. In the Middle Ages, the castle was repeatedly owned by monasteries and noblemen until it fell into ruin in the 15th and 16th centuries due to wars and the plague.
From 1905, the ruins were acquired by the Berlin architect Bernhard Sehring, who built a romantic castle complex there. He designed an impressive complex with fortified towers, a park with water features and a mausoleum. the castle was opened to the public for the first time in 1933. After the death of Sehring and his family, the buildings fell into disrepair until the GDR era when they began to be used as a training center and cultural venue.
After reunification, a Berlin couple, Jutta and Rolf Illmer, acquired the castle. They restored it with the help of support associations and turned it back into a popular excursion destination. After Rolf Illmer’s death in 2013, his wife took over the inheritance and continued the restoration. Today, Roseburg Castle is a tourist highlight with cultural events, without losing its romantic charm.
