Camino Primitivo – Section 9 – A Fonsagrada to O Cádavo

Today wasn’t the best day, which was less due to the route itself and more to my right knee. It kept giving me slight pain – not severe enough to stop me from continuing, but just annoying enough to get on my nerves. Fortunately, I was able to distract myself from the surrounding landscape. Since we had completed the Hospitales route, I was really starting to enjoy the Camino. Before, I was rather annoyed by the many roads and the large number of people – I just wasn’t used to it.

Sun, thirst and the challenge of the stage

The weather also played an unusual role. We weren’t used to having so much sun and I don’t think we all had enough water with us. Our throats were dry and our tongues were literally sticking to the roof of our mouths. Nevertheless, the 25-kilometer stage flew by. When we had finally organized something to drink, checked into our accommodation and freshened up, the exertion of the day slowly fell away.

Exploring O Cádavo

After we had washed up and ordered laundry, we explored the village. O Cádavo, also known as Cádavo Baleira, is a small, quiet village in Galicia that plays an important role on the Camino Primitivo. Historically, a battle is said to have taken place here between the Christian King Alfonso II and the Moors, which gives the place a certain historical depth.

The town offers everything a pilgrim needs: a small supermarket, plenty of restaurants and bars. Despite its modest size, there is a special sense of hospitality and warmth. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills and green forests – typically Galician and wonderfully calming.

A cozy evening

In the evening, we went to eat and drink with Stefan in one of the pubs. After a large beer, I began to get used to this luxury pilgrim life. The anticipation of my freshly laundered clothes in the accommodation brought the day to a relaxed close. Despite the challenges, it was a nice finish – a mix of effort and small rewards that makes the Camino so special.
