Myakka River State Park is one of the oldest and largest state parks protecting one of the most diverse natural areas. The Myakka River flows through 150 square miles of wetlands, prairies and forests. Within the park, a river, two lakes provide many opportunities for fishing, canoeing and kayaking. A boat ramp provides access to the upper Myakka Lake. But for us, as hikers much more interesting is the opportunity to walk through the scenic and attractive landscape.

Overnight Camping

You can rent small cabins on site or pitch your tent on several campsites. Contact information for reservations can be found at myakkariver.org. Rates for a basic campground without electricity (there are 6 in the state park) are $4 (per person per night). A night in a campground with electricity and water is $22 (per person per night) and a cabin is $60 (for 4 people per night).

If you prefer to stay in a vacation home, you will find a good overview of vacation homes near Myakka River State Park on Ferienhaus-Privat.de.

Animals

Of the diverse wildlife in Florida, you should be able to see the American alligator and the armadillo particularly well in Myakka River State Park.

What to read about the Mykka River State Park

If you want to plan everything in advance, you can download the park brochures on myakkariver.org in .pdf format (Acrobat Reader is required for viewing) and print them out. You can also find a map for biking and hiking trails there.

There is not much literature about Myakka River State Park. The only thing I found on Amazon.de is the English book Myakka. Since you don’t get any information about it on the German Amazon page, I looked it up on the English page and summarized it a bit.

The author of the book has worked in the park as a ranger for 15 years and tells the story of the park. She gives you an understanding of the flora and fauna and shows you the “secret places” with the help of carefully drawn maps that show you the best trails.

A detailed report about a hike in Myakka River State Park of about 25 km length can be found here Myakka River Prarie Trail.
The hike can be done in one day or – the better alternative as a tour – with an overnight stay at one of the idyllic primitive campgrounds.
