Lake Garda, not only Italy’s largest lake—which attracts thousands of surfers every year—is also a paradise for climbing, hiking, and mountain biking enthusiasts. It is located in northern Italy and is surrounded by numerous mountains that practically invite you to lace up your hiking boots and climb them.
Lake Garda could be the ideal destination for anyone looking to aim high on their vacation. The northern part is particularly appealing to outdoor enthusiasts, while the southern part is flatter and less scenic.
Best Time to Visit
The vacation season on Lake Garda begins around early April. Those who want to avoid mass tourism can also arrive a little earlier. Temperatures are relatively mild year-round, and even winters are usually frost-free (at the end of March, temperatures ranged between 5 and 15 °C). However, you should expect snow and lower temperatures at elevations above 1,000 meters. With the right gear, though, this shouldn’t be a problem.
The Region and Its People
There should be hardly any language barriers at Lake Garda, as almost all locals speak German. The residents are well aware that their region depends on tourism and know how to encourage visitors to return.
Hiking Areas
Here is a brief overview of some interesting hiking areas around Lake Garda. Of course, there are many more, such as the Monte Baldo mountain range east of the lake.
Tremosine
The Tremosine Plateau lies about 600 m above Lake Garda and offers access to many mountain trails. A good starting point for hikes would be Vesio. From there, you have easy access to numerous hiking trails. For those looking for a change of pace from the secluded mountain scenery, a stroll through the smaller villages is recommended, despite the elevation changes.
Riva
Riva is located at the northernmost tip of Lake Garda and is very touristy, but it has a very beautiful old town. Visitors to the town are a mix of older spa guests and younger, active individuals. Those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of civilization can quickly head into the nearby mountains (La Rocchetta).
Lake Ledro
Although Lake Ledro isn’t Lake Garda, it’s located right nearby. It’s a small alpine lake at an elevation of 655 meters, so the climate there is a bit cooler. There are two larger towns on the lake: Molina di Ledro to the east and Pieve di Ledro to the west. You can walk around the lake, but you’ll have to be prepared to walk either on or alongside the road. I took a hike in the southern mountains around Lake Ledro, which I really enjoyed, even though at times I was ankle-deep in snow (late March).
Trails and Markings
The major trails with three-digit numbers on the maps are usually marked with a red-and-white flag. However, this can be confusing, as the markings are quite irregular and many side trails aren’t even shown on the maps. The sparse signage isn’t always helpful either. Therefore, you should have a good sense of direction.
The condition of the trails varies greatly, ranging from very good to relatively poor. Sometimes you might find yourself transitioning from a wide, pleasant trail to a narrow path that winds its way up into the mountains. But that’s all part of the adventure.
In general, you should have a head for heights if you want to go hiking around Lake Garda. Many trails are relatively narrow and run close to cliffs, though this usually offers breathtaking views.
Maps of Lake Garda
We tried several maps, but we kept coming across side trails that weren’t marked on any of them. You can purchase Kompass maps of Lake Garda on Amazon.de. An alternative to the Kompass maps are the maps from 4Land, which you can buy online on the Italian website. To the best of my knowledge, 4Land does not offer a complete map of Lake Garda, only sections of it. You can also pick up these maps at some tourist offices. Free maps are also available at many campgrounds or hotels if you ask nicely at the front desk. However, the usefulness of these maps is questionable.
Literature on Lake Garda
The book *Lake Garda* by Eberhard Fohrer, published by Michael Müller Verlag, isn’t necessarily of interest to hikers, but it offers a wealth of information for the average vacationer. Another recommended book is “Wandern kompakt – Gardasee” published by Bruckmann Verlag. This book features 30 hikes with detailed maps and elevation profiles.
Accommodations on Lake Garda
Wild camping is not permitted at Lake Garda either. It’s also not always easy to find a suitable spot to pitch a tent. However, once you’ve found a good spot, you can safely use it without expecting any major problems, since the trails aren’t heavily frequented outside the high season (we were there in late March).
If you don’t want to risk getting a fine, you can stay at one of the many hotels or at a campground. The price for one night at a campground for two people with a car and a tent is usually between €15 and €30. You can actually find accommodations just about anywhere around Lake Garda, since the area is heavily geared toward tourism. Outside the high season, however, not all campgrounds and hotels are open yet, as many don’t open until… As is common throughout Italy, opening hours aren’t always very customer-friendly, so you might have to wait a few hours under certain circumstances. In Riva, there’s also a post office that opens at 8:30 a.m. and has an ATM. In smaller towns, you’ll have to look around a bit, but you’ll usually find all the essential amenities there as well.
I hope this information helps you plan your trip to Lake Garda! Enjoy your time in this beautiful region and explore the unique nature and culture that Lake Garda has to offer.
