Elba, Italy

The beautiful Tuscan island of Elba offers every hiking enthusiast a wide variety of hiking trails and unique views. A selection of hiking trails is intended to give you a taste of the island’s fantastic hiking opportunities.

Amid Tuscan scrub and rugged cliffs

The Arpichel island of Elba is Italy’s third-largest island and offers such extraordinary scenic diversity that a truly unique vacation is guaranteed. The hilly island is covered in typical Tuscan maquis, whose flora lends the island vibrant colors and the scent of the sea. Every corner of the island offers unique views of the turquoise sea, pine-covered hills, impressive rocky coastlines, and secluded sandy beaches.

Amid lush meadows, olive groves, vineyards, and orchards, authentic little Tuscan villages pop up here and there—some nestled almost fortress-like into the hilly landscape, others charmingly situated along a bay. For hiking, it’s especially recommended to visit in the spring, as the sometimes very hot temperatures in summer can make hiking quite unpleasant. Generally, the island is in bloom from March through October, so you can admire and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery almost any time of year.

Hiking on Elba

Bagnaia (Volterraio) – Rio nell’Elba

The small former fishing village of Bagnaia remains one of the most authentic and unspoiled places on the island. It’s definitely a great starting point for a hike, as you can hike from Bagnaia to both the Volterraio and Rio Nell’Elba. A roughly two-hour hike of easy difficulty leads to Volterraio, the former refuge of the Elban people. This fortified tower stands on the mountain of the same name at an elevation of 400 meters and served as a refuge for the Elban people from pirates.

The trail up the mountain winds through beautiful macchia. The final stretch of the ascent involves somewhat rocky paths and is relatively steep. Once you reach the Volterraio, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view of the Gulf of Portoferraio—truly breathtaking! If you don’t want to climb the entire mountain, you can drive the first part. From the parking lot, it takes about another 30 minutes on foot.

Walking time for Bagnaia–Volterraio–Bagnaia: 3–4 hours

A second hiking route leads from Bagnaia to Rio Nell’Elba. This former mining village is located south of Bagnaia on a mountain and has a fortress-like character. With about 900 residents, the village is very compact and impresses with its narrow, steep alleys. The hike to Rio Nell’Elba takes about two hours and follows both narrow trails and wide sandy roads.

From Bagnaia, the trail begins with a long uphill stretch, but with every step, the view gets more and more beautiful! The route isn’t marked, so here’s a quick tip: When you’re on the wider sandy road, a trail continues to the right up the mountain behind a dry ditch—this is your hiking route. The trail splits once more behind the hilltop—take the right path again here.

Even though the signage may seem unprofessional, this allows for a hike through unspoiled nature with plenty of peace and truly unique views. In Rio Nell’Elba, a steep alley leads to the piazza, where you can take a leisurely break at a café before heading back.

Marciana Alta–Monte Capanne

This hike is a real must for every hiking enthusiast. Those looking for a true athletic challenge can tackle both the ascent and descent on foot, though you should plan for at least 9–10 hours total. The ascent takes about 5–6 hours and the descent 3–4 hours. Alternatively, you can take a cable car from Marciana Alta: shaped like a golden parrot cage, its open latticework makes the ride up a truly special experience. At 1,018 meters, Monte Capanne is the island’s highest mountain. Once you reach the top, you’ll be treated to a magnificent view: on a clear day, you can see the entire island of Elba (and its distinctive fish-like shape!), as well as the surrounding islands of Corsica, Capraia, and Sardinia. But the ascent and descent of Monte Capanne are particularly varied.

The hiking trails are truly characterized by completely different landscapes: at the summit of the mountain, there are stone slabs and scree (sturdy footwear is absolutely essential!), followed by flowering maquis, which eventually gives way to dense green forests. It’s not uncommon to encounter a mountain goat; they are much more common throughout the western part of the island than in the more densely populated east. Most of the time, the hiking trails are either signposted or marked with splashes of color on the surrounding rocks, but you must always hike with your eyes open and remain highly alert to ensure you stay on the right path. In any case, however, a climb up Monte Capanne is highly recommended!

Practical Tips for Hiking on Elba:

Unfortunately, the hiking trails on Elba are not well signposted or marked. It is recommended that you carry a map and a compass, as well as good maps of Elba. The most beautiful hiking area on Elba is located in the western part of the island, roughly west of the line connecting Marciana Marina and Marina di Campo. Here rises Monte Capanne (see Tour 3), the island’s highest peak at 1,018 m. Highly recommended, especially in May and through mid-June during the macchia bloom!
