North Sea–Baltic Sea Trail – Hiking in Northern Germany

Nord-Ostsee-WanderwegIf you’re not really the type for mountain hikes, you might enjoy the approximately 117-kilometer-long North Sea–Baltic Sea Trail, which consists of 5 stages. Its highest point is still under 100 meters. Contrary to what the name suggests, the trail doesn’t allow you to hike from one coast to the other if you only follow the standard route.

If you really want to walk from coast to coast, you should check out the Outdoorseiten.net Wiki. There you’ll find the necessary route extensions.

Markings & Maps

The route of the North-Baltic Sea Hiking Trail is marked with a yellow arrow with a green border. You should definitely bring a map with you, as the markings are not sufficient. Wanderbares Deutschland and the Outdoorseiten.net Wiki recommend two maps for this hike: the KOMPASS hiking map 717 “Heide-Dithmarschen” (ISBN: 3-87051-267-1) and “Hiking and Relaxation in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde District,” South Sheet (ISBN: 3-89130-314-9). However, I couldn’t find either of these maps on Amazon, so just ask at a bookstore to see if they can order them, or check directly at a local tourist office—maybe they can help you out there.
