The Gendarmstien is a long-distance hiking trail in the south of Denmark that is around 84 kilometers long and runs directly along the German-Danish border. It follows in the footsteps of the Danish border guards who once patrolled here and today offers hikers a varied mix of history, nature and coastal panoramas.
From Padborg on the border, the trail leads along the Flensburg Fjord – through hilly forest landscapes, historic cleats, tranquil lakes, wide beaches and small coastal villages – all the way up to the island of Als in Skovby.
Map overview and GPX track of the Gendarmstieg
The five stages at a glance
The mountain stage (Padborg – Sønderhav)
The first stage leads through hilly forests, the Kruså tunnel valley and Haraldsdalskløften. Historic boundary stones and the copper mill, once one of the largest copper works in Northern Europe, characterize the route. Highlights are the views over the Flensburg Fjord and the overnight stay in the DCU shelter near Sønderhav.

The brick stage (Sønderhav – Brunsnæs)
Along the coast, you walk over beaches and through small coastal villages, pass bridges such as the lifting bridge in Egernsund and discover the traces of old brickworks that give the section its name. The stage ends at a free shelter near Brunsnæs – both sociable and idyllic.

The crow stage (Brunsnæs – Gammelmark)
This stage combines stretches of beach with meadows, fields and shady avenues. Wild geese, cliffs at Kragesand and the Danish shelter culture make this section particularly varied. The day ends in Gammelmark – perfect for a small celebration or a cozy dinner.

The beach stage (Gammelmark – Høruphav)
The 19-kilometre route takes you along sandy beaches, past historic sites such as the Dybbøl Banke and through the town of Sønderborg. The stage combines nature experiences with history and offers free shelters that provide protection even in the rain.

The mill stage (Høruphav – Skovby)
The youngest section of Gendarmstien leads through coastal forest, narrow paths and across fields to the island of Als. Highlights are the birdlife, deer, the striking cripple pines and the possibility of a detour to the historic torpedo station Hørup Klint. The stage ends in Skovby, where the trail ends unspectacularly, but the view of nature and the coast remains unforgettable.

Arrival and departure from the starting points
Padborg is easy to get to by train or bus from Flensburg. We went by car and originally wanted to start in Skovby. However, it was not possible to use public transport at the weekend, so we ended up starting in Padborg.
On weekdays, there seem to be 4-5 bus connections from Skovby to Sønderborg, from where you can easily get back to Padborg. At the weekend, however, things look bad.
Alternatively, you can take Flextur outside normal times for €70-80 (see section “Public transport”). An Uber ride was not possible for us and would have been very expensive at around €130.
If you are traveling by car, you also have the option of having your car driven from Padborg to Skovby – but this only works if you have a spare key. The cost is approx. 70 € (see official website). In retrospect, this would have been the most convenient solution.
In the end, we decided to take the bus back, which cost €28, but took just under 3 hours and involved changing buses twice.
Public transportation
If you want to use public transport in Denmark, there are two apps you can use:
- Rejseplanen: To plan routes and connections.
- Rejsebillet: To buy tickets if you don’t have cash.
Using public transport in Denmark is a little awkward: Rejseplanen does not allow you to buy tickets directly, while Rejsebillet is only suitable for planning to a limited extent, as it only shows immediately available connections. An example: On Wednesday evening I wanted to look for connections to Padborg, but nothing was offered for sale in Rejsebillet. It wasn’t until the next day that I was able to book a ticket with peace of mind.
Nevertheless, Rejsebillet is a useful app, especially for those not familiar with the area, as it prevents you from driving past your stop.
Accommodation options on the Gendarmstien
There are numerous places to stay overnight along the way. Denmark offers free natural campsites for tents, and there are also some shelters where you can stay overnight free of charge. However, some shelters must be paid for, can be reserved or are only chargeable if reserved.
It is also possible to stay overnight in campsites or hotels without any problems. The shelter app, which can be downloaded from the Playstore, is practical – it provides an overview of all nature campsites in Denmark and is very useful when you are out and about.
Supply options
There are no supermarkets directly along the way – a short detour is usually necessary. However, the shopping facilities are usually signposted so that you don’t miss them.
We got water from public toilets, where there are often shallow washbasins, from taps along the way or from supermarkets. The signs along the Gendarmstien usually also indicate where water is available. The whole thing is very straightforward.
If you want to eat, you will also find one or two snack bars along the way.
Cash
Denmark has its own currency, the Danish krone (DKK). It makes perfect sense to take a few crowns with you or withdraw them from an ATM. Otherwise we might have had to skip a portion of chips at the snack bar. Cash can also be useful for the bus, as card payment is not possible there – alternatively, you can book the trip via an app.
In supermarkets and campsites, paying by card was no problem for us. We got by just fine with DKK 150 in cash.
There are also Flextur and Plustur connections, so-called call line buses. Online booking was not possible for us without a Danish MyID account. Booking by phone would have been possible in theory, but for unknown reasons it didn’t work for us – the bus didn’t show up. Important to know: Such bookings require a lead time of at least two hours.
